Abstract
583,496. Aerials. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and WILLOUGHBY, E. O. April 21, 1944, No. 7480. [Class 40 (v)] A short aerial for aircraft comprises a pair of magnetically coupled resonators enclosed in a streamlined hollow conductor 4, and tuned to the signal frequency. One resonator is of the coaxial type and comprises the outer conductor 4 and a pair of parallel rods 1 (of which only the more distant one is seen in Fig. 5) forming' the inner conductor. These are about #/5 long and terminate in two metal masses 15, 16, which are separated by insulation 13, 14 from the outer conductor 4, the capacity between them and it being adjustable by means of screw-mounted discs 27, 28 co-operating with tongues 25, 26. The masses 15, 16 are extended by streamlined metal end caps 29, 30. The second resonator also is coaxial and comprises the outer conductor 4 and a flat strip 9 which lies between the rods 1 and forms the inner conductor. The strip 9 is connected to the outer conductor 4 conductively at its righthand end and capacitively at its left-hand end, the capacity being adjustable by means of a screw-mounted disc 23. For sending, the aerial is fed by means of a #/4 coaxial feeder 7, 8, which may be streamlined by means of a vane which turns in the wind. The sheath 7 of the feeder is connected to the outer con, ductor 4 of the aerial while its core 8 is connected to a metal plate 20 which is capacitively connected to the strip 9 through an insulating disc 21, and to the sheath 7 of the feeder through insulation 19. The resonators oscillate as dipoles and have equal values of Q. The resonator 9, 4 is thus excited by the feeder 7, 8 and is magnetically coupled to the first resonator 1, 4, the value of the coupling factor being somewhat greater than the critical value so as to produce a band-pass effect. The magnetic coupling can be varied by adjusting the distance apart, Fig. 6 (not shown), of the two rods 1. Radiation is emitted by the outer conductor 4 forming an open-ended transmission line with the ground. For receiving, the conductor 9 may be connected through an inert rectifier at a point of relatively low potential to the core of the feeder, Fig. 7 (not shown), or through a diode at its open end to the outer conductor 4, Fig. 8 (not shown).
