Abstract

A siliconized silicon carbide article is produced by forming a continuous skeletal structure of carbon by the interaction of furfural and/or furfuryl alcohol with hydrochloric, sulphuric or other mineral acid, and subsequently heating the carbon structure in the presence of silicon at such a temperature that the silicon combines with the carbon to form silicon carbide. The structure-forming reaction may be effected in an appropriately shaped container to produce a required silicon carbide article, e.g., electrical resistance or refractory, [see Group V]. Loading materials such as finely-divided carbon and/or glycerine may be added to the liquid reagents from which the carbon structure is produced. The siliconization is effected by bringing the carbon article into contact with molten or vaporous silicon at temperatures above 1,800 DEG C. Excess of silicon is employed. The carbon article is preferably dried or calcined before the siliconization step. Specification 513,265 is referred to.ALSO:A siliconised silicon carbide refractory or electric resistance is produced by forming a continuous structure of carbon by the interaction of furfural and furfuryl alcohol with a reagent (see Group III), and subsequently heating the carbon structure in the presence of silicon at such a temperature that the silicon combines with the carbon to form silicon carbide (see Group III). Excess of silicon is employed. The structure-forming reaction may be effected in an appropriately shaped container to produce the required silicon carbide article. Such container may be a temporary mould made from such material as wax which is removed from the formed carbon body by means of heat. Specification 513,265 is referred to.
