Abstract

582.884. Pneumatic tyres; tube and like joints. LEE RUBBER AND TIRE CORPORATION. May 23, 1945, No. 12913. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1944. [Class 144 (ii)] A method of forming a butt-joint between the ends of an air-tube, or other rubber article, formed of synthetic rubber consists in binding the assembled ends with a tape which will not forcibly adhere to the synthetic rubber of the tube &c. during the subsequent vulcanization so that it can be readily stripped from the cured joint. As illustrated in Fig. 3, a tape 13 of bias-cut fabric, coated with adhesive having no vulcanizing affinity for the rubber of the tube 10, is lapped around the butted ends 11, 12. During inflation in the vulcanizing mould, the tape expands lengthwise and shrinks transversely to enhance the tightness of the joint and produce an internal thickening 15, Fig. 7. The tape may be applied over the tread half only of the tube; and, as shown in Fig. 8, the ends of the tape 13 may be connected by a strip 17 of rubber &c. adapted to adhere permanently to the other portion of the tube during vulcanization of the joint.
