Abstract
582,842. Height sounding. BURNEY, SIR C. D. May 4, 1939. Nos. 13404, 20782 and 24444. [Class 97 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXI, XXXII, XXXIII and XL] An aircraft or aerial gliding body, such as a bomb or torpedo, is equipped with a trailing object 51, Fig. 21, which may be used for height-sounding and which receives an aerodynamic down-thrust when towed to keep the object at a constant distance below the aircraft &c. at all speeds, a fixed elevator surface 55, being provided at the tail of the object to maintain the object with its longitudinal axis at a constant angle in the vertical plane to the line of travel. The tow line 59 is connected to a tow point 61 on the object and the line joining the point 61 to the centre of gravity CG of the object when produced passes through the centre of pressure CP of the object. The body of the object may be shaped to provide the down-thrust or inverted wings 54 may be provided to form an aerial paravane as shown in Fig. 11. The tow line 59 passes over a drum 58 on the paravane fitted with spring- controlled braking means. The paravane is formed of aluminium in half sections connected by bolts 52. The tail carries the elevator 55 and rudder fins 56. Fig. 16 shows a modified form of paravane in which the depth of tow may be pre-adjusted by a screw 67 which alters the angle between a feeler 61 bearing on the drum cable and a detent d which engages teeth on the drum to stop the paying out of the cable when the desired depth is reached.
