Abstract

Artificial silk yarns for reinforcing rubber articles are formed from viscose containing a heat-hardening aldehyde resin, or the components thereof, in an amount not exceeding 5 per cent by weight of the cellulose content of the viscose. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde, and the other component may be a phenol, e.g. a polyhydric phenol such as resorcinol. Formalin and resorcinol are dissolved in diluted aqueous caustic soda, and the resulting solution mixed with viscose during or after the stage at which the cellulose xanthate is treated with sodium hydroxide to allow ripening to take place. The ripened viscose is spun into threads.ALSO:Rubber is bonded by vulcanization to artificial silk yarns which have been formed from viscose containing a heat-hardening aldehyde resin, or the components thereof, in an amount not exceeding 5 per cent. by weight of the cellulose content of the viscose. The aldehyde may be formaldehyde, and the other component may be a phenol, e.g., a polyhydric phenol such as resorcinol. Formalin and resorcinol are dissolved in dilute aqueous caustic soda, and the resulting solution mixed with viscose during or after the stage at which the cellulose xanthate is treated with sodium hydroxide to allow ripening to take place, the ripened viscose is spun into threads each comprising 500 filaments and two such threads are twisted together to produce a cord. The yarn may be doubled, cabled, or woven to fabric before applying the rubber composition. Weftless cord fabric may be made by calendering rubber on to a number of parallel cords. Tyre covers containing layers of rubberized cord fabric, and belting or hose made up of layers of rubber and artificial silk, may be produced. The rubber may be natural, reclaim, or synthetic, e.g., a co-polymer of butadiene and styrene.
