Abstract
581,693. Flax and like harvesters. BRADLEY, J., and DINGLE, H. E. May 1, 1942, No. 5926. [Class 6 (iii)] In harvesting flax and other straw crops, the stems are guided by dividers 5, 6 between inclined belts 10, 11 by which they are pulled, elevated and conveyed to bunch separating and tying mechanism, the vertical position being maintained throughout. From the several pairs of pulling belts the straw passes between fixed guides 22 and a common conveyer 30. It is bunched between fingers 33, and, when a predetermined quantity has accumulated, trips a lever 26 which sets the belts 31, 32 in motion to feed the material to a tying mechanism. To increase the. length of stem gripped between the pulling belts 10, 11 and conveyer 30, the former are made of rounded or angular cross-section, or superposed but spaced rounded belts may be used. In order that the bundles may be tied as near the middle as possible the belts 31, 32 may be adjustably mounted to vary the direction of delivery. Weeds may be cut by a knife close to the ground beneath the pulling mechanism, such knife being protected by a comb. The machine may also be fitted with a reciprocating cutter bar for harvesting straw crops by cutting.
