Abstract

<PICT:0581390/IV/1> The melt spinning of synthetic linear polyamide filaments and yarns may be operated for long periods of time without the formation of "drips" at the spinning face, if a stream of inert gas, e.g. nitrogen, is passed through the molten mass of the material. The filaments and yarns so obtained have improved and more uniform physical characteristics. The temperature of the inert gas is preferably not below 100 DEG C., and in addition to being passed through the molten material the gas may also be passed over the solid material prior to melting. Solid polyamide particles are fed to charging hopper 1 and are allowed to pass valve 3, as required, into feeding hopper 2 and melt chamber 10. The feeding hopper 2 is surrounded by heating jacket 4 and a heating medium is passed through coil 11 which serves to melt the polyamide. The inert gas is passed through the inlet 9 and leaves the feeding hopper by outlets 7 or 8. The charging hopper is also provided with inlet and outlet means 15 and 16 for the passage of inert gas therethrough. Examples are given in which polyhexamethylene adipamide chips are fed to the apparatus. The heating jacket is maintained at 200 DEG C., and oxygen-free nitrogen is passed through the molten material. Suitable synthetic fibre-forming polyamides are prepared by processes described in Specifications 461,236 and 461,237. Specifications 533,307, 549,208 and 555,130 also are referred to.
