Abstract

1501696 Coating pipes METALLGESELLSCHAFT AG 25 March 1975 [26 March 1974 (2)] 12515]75 Heading D1L [Also in Division B2] A method of continuously producing a plastics coating on the outside surface of a metal pipe comprises conducting the pipe through a cylindrical coating chamber, the axis of which is horizontal, in countercurrent to a turbulent air stream charged with a metered quantity of a plastics powder, the pipe having been heated to a temperature which is sufficiently high but not higher than is necessary for the formation on the pipe of a plastics coating of frit and heating the pipe as it leaves the coating chamber to a higher temperature which is sufficient to fuse and smooth the plastics coating to frit. The term "frit" means a coating of the plastics powder in which the particles have incipiently melted at their surfaces and have sintered together to form a coating which is porous. The plastics powder in the turbulent air is preferably in a quantity of 0.5 to 5kg/m<SP>3</SP>. The plastics powder preferably has a grain size below 100Ám. In the Fig. a pipe 1 is passed through an induction coil 2, a coating head 3 and a second induction coil 4 before passing to a cooler 5. The plastics powder is blown by a fan into the coating head via a metering device.
