Abstract
581,312. Printing-machines. SMITH & SON, Ltd., W. H., and EVANS, A. Sept. 4, 1944, No. 16861. [Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] Addressing and like machines ; feeding webs. An addressing or like series-printing machine of the kind comprising a reciprocatory carriage 19, Fig. 1, carrying an impression roller 50 which is lowered during the forward stroke of the carriage (to the right) until towards the end of the stroke it is in contact with the paper, and rolls over the paper during the return stroke to print from an address-plate, is provided with a web-feeding attachment 10 comprising pin-wheels 16, e.g. of the construction described in Specification 408,125, or plain feed-rollers, carried by a shaft 15 coupled to the carriage 19 so that the shaft turns in one direction on forward movement of the carriage, the coupling-device including a lost-motion device whereby no drive is transmitted to the shaft 15 during the final part of the stroke of the carriage when the impression roller is down on the paper. A spring-returned shaft 20 rotated by a chain 22 from the carriage 19 carries an arm 24 connected by a link 25 to an arm 51, Fig. 3, turning about a shaft 27 and carrying a pin 31 riding in a slot 32 in a quadrant 26 carrying a pawl 29 engaging a ratchet 28 fixed to the shaft 27 which is geared to the feed shaft 15. Towards the end of the forward stroke of the carriage 19, the quadrant 26 engages a stop 34, and the pin 31 then rides in the slot 32 tensioning a spring 33. A shield 35 can be adjusted on the ratchet to vary the effective stroke of the pawl. The feed rollers ]6 are adjustable along the shaft. 15 and are retained in position by claws engaging serrations or an equivalent helical groove in the shaft. Discs 17 spaced apart by springs 18 assist in the feed. The shaft 20 can be turned by a hand crank 36. The web may be a long series of forms, e.g. a zig-zag, folded pack, and a re-fold tray may be provided.
