Abstract

580,978. Directive wireless signalling. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd., and NISBET, R. H. Dec. 8, 1941, No. 12808/42. Divided out of 580,975. [Class 40 (v)] A system for determining the direction of an object from a transmitting station comprises an equi-signal beacon at the transmitting station, means for turning the beacon about an axis, a receiver responsive to the radiation reflected by the object and including means for deter. mining the orientation of the transmitter for which the receiver response is equal for the two signals. In the described embodiment, the transmitter comprises a pair of antenna and reflector units 5<1> 5<11>, Fig. 2, set at an angle and rotatable together to produce a pair of overlapping beams having characteristic modulation frequencies of w1 and w2 respectively, the reflected wave being received by a similar rotatable unit. After rectification at 66 the modulation components are separated by a filter 67 and separately rectified at 68, 69 to give D.C. outputs which are applied to circuits 70, 71 in such a way as to produce currents proportional respectively to the difference and the sum of the signals. These are fed to relays 73, 74 arranged so that a signal is recorded on an indicator 76 only when the difference is zero and the sum is of substantial value. The orientation of the transmitter at this instant gives the direction of the reflecting object. Instead of using a rotating antenna, the overlapping beams may be produced by successively energized antennµ as described in Specification 526,658. Specification 580,975 also is referred to.
