Abstract

580,977. Directive wireless signalling. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Ltd., and NISBET, R. H. Dec. 8, 1941, No. 12807/42. Divided out of 580,975. [Class 40 (v)] An antenna arrangement for producing a rotating beam or for receiving from a variable direction comprises six dipoles 53 each arranged along the focal line of a parabolic reflector 52 mounted on a spider 51 rotatable about an axis 6. A fixed metallic screen 54 is formed with an aperture which allows radiation to be emitted or received only over a useful angle. The antennµ are connected to the transmitter or receiver in succession either by an electronic switch or by a capacity commutator (Fig. 2, not shown). This allows a quicker rate of scanning for a given rotational speed of the apparatus and may be used in the system of obstacle detection described in Specification 580,975. If desired, the units may be axially as well as angularly separated, in which case the antennµ may lie along the axis of rotation and only the reflectors need rotate.
