Abstract

580,412. Reciprocatory filing-machines. MICROMATIC HONE CORPORATION. Nov. 1, 1943, No. 18039. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1942. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] A honing or filing tool for internal helical slots or grooves comprises a number of groups of abrasive &c. elements circumferentially mounted on the body, the elements of one group being aligned with elements of another group on helices about the tool axis, whereby several elements operate in each groove of the work. The driving end comprises a tapered shank 25, Fig. 2, connected by a universal joint 26 ... 29 to a sleeve 31 having therein bayonet slots 32 to receive a pin 33 on a tubular element 34, a locking sleeve 35 for the joint being mounted on the sleeve 31. Within the sleeve 34 is a plunger 37, slotted for the passage of the pin 33, carrying a pin 39 which passes through a slot 41 into a sleeve 42, being retained by a ring 43; a ring 44 secured to the tube 34 limits axial movement of the sleeve 42. On the sleeve is a rotatable collar 46 locked in position by balls 48 and threaded at 47 to engage threads 54 on a sleeve 53 connected by a pin 55 to a block 56 to which an adjusting rod 57 is secured. A spring 61 urges the. plunger 37 towards the portion 22 and serves to move the rod 57 to allow the tool to contracts; expansion of the tool is effected by rotation of the collar 46 or by a rod 63 passing through the portion 22 and moved by pressure fluid. The sleeve 34 is connected to an extension member 23; Fig. 3, by a screwed part 67 and a key 68 retained in position by a slidable sleeve 64 locked by a spring pin 65; several such extension members may be used. The body or tool-portion proper comprises a body 72 connected to the member 23 by a ball joint 71, the rod 57 also being connected by a ball joint 76 to a rod 79 in the body 72. The rod 79 has thereon a series of frusto-conical abutments 82 engaging pins 86 on stone holders 87 guided in bushes 85 in openings 84 in the body 72 ; the holders are set to the helical angle of the slots and carry stones 91 and are urged inwardly by garter springs 89. The holders are arranged in sets, the set 92 being offset from the set 91 and set 93 offset from set 92, &c. ; by this arrangement several stones operate in each slot. The hone is reciprocated in the gun barrel &c. by a fluid pressure cylinder, and is given the necessary rotary movement by means of pins 96 spring pressed to engage in the roughed-out grooves or slots ; if the hone is to cut slots in an uncut tube, means is provided for giving the rotary movement. Blocks 97 may be provided on the body 72 to rest on the top of the lands between the grooves to support the tool. A tool for use in barrels of small diameter has the stone holders lying in slots in the body and engaging conical surfaces on the adjusting rod ; as shown in Fig. 13, the holders 128 have their longitudinal axes parallel to the axis of the tool body, the stone 131 being set in the holders at the helix angle. In modifications, the stones and holders are held in position by garter springs disposed in grooves in the body at one or both ends of the holders, the grooves having tapered walls 133, Fig. 10; the stones may be disposed in metal sheaths exposing only the outer face of the stones ; the tool body may have therein helical slots to engage the lands in the barrel.
