Abstract
Ethylene, alone or mixed with other polymerizable compounds, is polymerized at elevated temperature and pressure, in an aqueous medium and a polymerization catalyst, but in the absence of a dispersing agent. The aqueous medium may contain volatile organic liquid, e.g. iso-octane, toluene, butyl acetate, ethyl ether, n-hexane, cyclohexane, cyclohexanol, methanol, ethanol, butanol, metabromtoluene or petroleum ether. Small amounts of organic per-compounds may be used as catalyst, preferably in a pH range of 1-6; or metal persulphates with a pH 7-11, as described in Specification 579,881, may be employed. The process may be carried out as a batch process, or continuously, e.g. in the manner described in Specification 579,882. Other polymerizable compounds are specified. Examples are given of the production of polymers from ethylene and propylene and of copolymers of ethylene with methyl methacrylate and vinyl chloride.
