Abstract

579,847. Lubricating grease; soap manufacture. STANDARD OIL DEVELOPMENT CO. July 31, 1942, No. 10717. Convention date, Aug. 19, 1941. [Class 91] Lubricating grease is prepared by mixing fat or other saponifiable material with a saponifying agent, with or without a small amount of mineral oil, in a mixing vessel, removing relatively small portions of the mixture from the mixing vessel, heating the same outside the mixing vessel to effect at least partial saponification, recycling the heated material until the entire mixture is saponified, and then blending with mineral oil to form a grease. In the arrangement shown, the soap-forming materials are supplied to closed pressure vessels 1 which are truncated at the bottom and have pipes 5 leading from the middle portions to a pump 6 and coil heater 7 from which the mixture is returned to the bottom of the mixer by a pipe 8. The capacity of the pump is sufficient to circulate a volume of material equal to that of one of the vessels 1 in less than 3 minutes, and the temperature of the heater 7 is maintained preferably at 300‹ to 400‹ F. The finished soap stock is finally discharged through a pipe 10, cooler 11, and metering pump 13 to a high speed mixer or disperser 14 where it is mixed with oil of suitable viscosity supplied by the pipe 15, oil heater 16, and oil pump 18. The finished lubricating grease is discharged through a filter 20 and pressure control valve 21 to the outlet. A number of fatty materials and saponifying agents are specified. When mixed saponifying agents such as lime and soda are employed, the lime should preferably constitute at least 90 per cent. of the total base. For lime soap greases the water content should be from .05 to .15 per cent. of water for each per cent. of lime soap present; for soda soap grease the maximum water content should be about 1 per cent. Alkali metal soap may be converted into the corresponding aluminium soaps by treating with aluminium sulphate.
