Abstract

579,567. Automatic tuning correction. MARCONI'S WIRELESS TELEGRAPH CO., Ltd., and CANTELO, H. R. Oct. 7, 1943, No. 16450. [Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXV] In a combined transmitting and receiving radio apparatus, the transmitting oscillator is stabilized in frequency by association with a standard oscillator, a discriminator and a frequency-controlling device ; and during reception, the transmitting oscillator is associated with the standard oscillator to produce a resultant oscillation for mixing with the received waves to produce an intermediate frequency which, when varied from its normal value, exerts a correcting action on the transmitting oscillator. As shown in the drawing, applied to a frequency-modulated system, the transmitting oscillator O1 is modulated by the signal AF in the reactance valve CV, and is multiplied in frequency at M1 before passing to an amplifier A1 and aerial AT. A standard oscillator 02 feeds a multiplier or harmonic selector M2 the output of which is combined in a frequency changer FCl with the output of the oscillator O1. When the switch S is on the transmitting contact T, the difference frequency from FC1 is fed to an amplifier IFA and to a limiter discriminator DL, which supplies a correcting voltage to the reactance valve CV should the oscillator O1 depart from normal. During reception, the multiplied frequency from O1 and M1 is mixed in the frequency-changer FC2 with the multiplied frequency from 02 and M2 and a resultant frequency is mixed in the frequency-changer FC3 with the received wave from AR. The beat passes through the switch S and amplifier IFA to the discriminator DL, and any drift in the incoming frequency is compensated by applying the D.C. component of its output to the reactance valve CV to shift the frequency of the source O1, whilst the A.C. component passes to the signal receiver af. The above arrangement is only applicable to systems using a single operating frequency, but in a modified arrangement, Fig. 2 (not shown) provision is made for the use of any selected frequency within a wide band. Specication 551,472 is referred to.
