Abstract
579,310. Electric control systems. BOULTON PAUL AIRCRAFT, Ltd., and NORTH, J. D. Dec. 18, 1934, Nos. 36270/34 and 32286/35. [Class 40 (i)] [Also in Group XXI] A selector switch in the circuit of an electromotor which drives a shaft intermittently is associated with stop mechanism in such a way that by manually setting a contact in the switch the motor is enabled to rotate the shaft to any one of a number of predetermined positions in which the shaft is then automatically stopped and held. The arrangement is applied to the control of a rotary bomb magazine in aircraft, to enable any selected bomb to be brought to the discharge position, (see Group XXI). As diagrammatically shown, a driving member 45 in the Geneva stop mechanism 47, 45, 50 is adapted to be continuously rotated by the motor 42, and, through pins 48, 49, to drive the slotted star wheel 50. This drives the spindle 20 of the magazine step by step, and ensures that the spindle is locked after each partial rotation. The star wheel is combined with a cam 57 having four faces which control a contact 58, movable over a set S of fixed contacts, each member of which is connected to one of a set of contacts 68-71 with which a manually-set contact 72 in a selector switch 64 co-operates. In any position to which the contact 72 may be set, three only of the contacts S are connected thereto. The current connections to the motor 42 from a battery 63 through a master switch 65 are such that as the contact 58 moves, the motor circuit remains closed until the isolated contact in the set S is reached, whereupon the motor stops, with the selected bomb in the discharge position and the magazine locked. All the bombs may be dropped in rapid succession by suitably setting the selector switch 64, or simply by closing a "salvo" switch 77.
