Abstract

Filaments, sheets, strips, tubes or ribbons, for use as absorbable surgical materials are formed from an alginate salt, for example calcium or beryllium alginate, and are treated with protein obtained from plasma to impart toughness; the formed alginate may be immersed in the protein solution, the solution coagulated, and the material dried. Alternatively, the protein is incorporated with the alginate salt, for example as a viscous solution, prior to forming into shape. Filaments are drawn out or spun, and may be braided or twisted together, to form sutures. An antiseptic or bacteriostatic, such as flavine, and an artificial resin, for controlling the rate of absorption, may be included. The Provisional Specification refers also to fibrin as a suitable protein.ALSO:Surgical materials, such as sutures, sheets, strips, tubes or ribbons, absorbable by the body tissues, are formed from an alginate salt, for example calcium or beryllium alginate, and are treated with protein obtained from plasma to impart toughness; the formed alginate may be immersed in the protein solution, the solution coagulated, and the material dried. Alternatively the protein is incorporated with the alginate salt, for example as a viscous solution, prior to forming into shape. Sutures are made by drawing out or spinning filaments, which may be braided or twisted together. An antiseptic or bacteriostatic such as flavine, and an artificial resin, for controlling the rate of absorption, may be included. The Provisional Specification refers also to fibrin as a suitable protein.
