Abstract
578,562. Agglutinated fibrous materials. BAKELITE, Ltd., KNEWSTUBB, N. W., and' ROBB; C: A. March' 6, 1944, No. 4147. [Class 140] Rods are manufactured by impregnating or coating longitudinally arranged fibres or fibrous. elements with a thermosetting resinous bonding agent, applying positive twist and tension to a bundle of the treated fibres and heating to effect hardening of the resin and bonding of the fibres. The fibres may be organic or inorganic, natural or synthetic, and may be in the form of filaments, slivers, rovings, yarns, threads, cables, strings, ropes or string-like elements prepared by twisting, felted or woven fibrous materials; for convenience in handling they may be enclosed in a sheath or tube, e.g., of woven material, which thus becomes an integral part of the finished rod. The bonding agent may consist of condensation products of.'formaldehyde with a phenol; a urea or an aminotriazine, surplus agent may be eliminated by passing the impregnated fibres through a die or through squeeze rolls. Fibrous material in sheet or tape form and treated with bonding, agent may be wound round the twisted fibrous elements before, during or-after the heating process so that the fibrous elements form a core in the resultant rod. Twist and tension is applied simultaneously. Long lengths of rod may be produced. In an example, 2,500 ends of cotton yam are dipped into an aqueous phenol formaldehyde condensated product, squeezed to remove excess, dried for half an hour at 110‹C., suspended,in an oven and subjected to a tension of 561bs, by means of a weight attached, to the bottom of the tank; 60‹ of twist per inch of length is applied by rotating the weight and heating is maintained at 120‹C, for two hours, to harden the binder. The rod produced may be used in cured or semi-cured form or may be used as a core for production of larger rods. Specifications 222,586, [Class 89 (i)] 433,010, 470,331 and 548,794, [Group IV], are referred to.
