Abstract

577,614. Hand hammers, ENGINEERING & RESEARCH CORPORATION. Feb. 28, 1944, No. 3633. Convention date, Oct. 28, 1943. [Class 61 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] A hammer head for contracting or upsetting a work-strip D, Fig. 21, comprises two normally separated parts 24, 26 having faces 4 to strike the work and being integrally but flexibly connected by the head 27 so that, when the faces 4 strike the work, the parts 24, 26 move one towards the other. The head may be formed from a block by cutting slots 6, 10, 12 and holes 8, X, Y. In a modification it is formed by cutting one slot 6 and a triangular, rectangular, or circular hole 82, Fig. 15. The parts 24, 26 may be. urged away from one another by a spring 66, Fig. 11, or be kept from relative movement, when required for peening, by a plug 90, Fig. 17, or a bolt 92, Fig. 18. The head may co-operate with a unitary support E for the work D or with another similar head in inverted position. If used to upset one edge of a strip this becomes curved in its own plane. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a die consisting of two normally separated parts which are not integral with the head but are each connected thereto by a spring. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
