Abstract

577,601. Thermally-actuated valves. GUMMERS, Ltd., and ELLIS, A. E. Jan. 26, 1944, No. 1480. [Class 135] A thermally-actuated valve for controlling closed circuit liquid heating or cooling systems and particularly such a system for the internalcombustion engine of a motor torpedo-boat or gun-boat comprises a casing a with an inlet b and two outlets c, d leading respectively to a heat exchanger and to a byepass conduit therefor, the outlets being controlled by separate butterfly valves j, n operated by a thermostat in the form of a bimetallic strip f with substantially V-shaped conformations arranged in an arcuate housing adjacent the inlet b, and operating the valves through a lever l in such manner that as one valve opens the other closes and means being provided to adjust the setting of the bimetallic strip. As applied to the cooling system of an internal-combustion engine, the inlet b is connected to the outflow from the cylinder jacket. The valves j, n are connected by links k, o respectively to a bellcrank lever l, l movable about a fixed fulcrum m with a crank-arm p connected to the free end i of the thermostat by a link q. The thermostat shown is of the kind which contracts on being heated and has two bimetallic strips joined at their ends by pins f<1> It is located between the wall of the housing a and a circular inner wall e, these walls being shaped at s to allow liquid to pass round the thermostat. A washer r separates the two bimetallic strips. The fixed end g of the thermostat is adjustable by means of a slotted exterior arm u which can be clamped by a nut y and which is adjustably splined to a central shaft q<1> carrying an interior arm p<1> secured to the fixed end of the thermostat. In a modification (also described in the Provisional Specification), this adjustment is effected by an eccentric. The thermostat may be of the kind which expands on heating, in which case the arm p is arranged diametrically opposite to the position shown. The thermostat may be loaded by a spring.
