Abstract
577,059. Grinding and polishing prisms. KODAK, Ltd. July 3, 1944, No. 12667. Convention date, July 3, 1943. [Class 60] A support for prisms while being polished &c. comprises a V-block, the recesses in which have raised surfaces by which the position of one surface of the prism is accurately defined with respect to the grinding plane. As shown in Fig. 3, one wall of the recess has two raised surfaces 14, while the other has a single raised surface 15 ; the angle between the grinding plane, which is parallel with the top surface of the block, and the prism surface resting on the surfaces 14 is thus accurately determined. In making a prism in which it is of major importance to reduce the error in the 90 degrees angle to a minimum, the sequence of operations consists in first polishing the hypotenuse surface with the prism supported in a 90 degrees block as in Fig. 4. The prism is then transferred to a 45 degrees block shown in Fig. 5, having two locating surfaces on the sloping wall whereby the sloping side of the prism, already polished, determines one of the 45 degrees angles of the prism. The prism is again transferred to another 45 degrees block having two locating surfaces in the vertical wall against which the previously polished wall is located, whereby the 90 degrees angle is produced with minimum error. This sequence also minimises pyramidal error. Polishing is continued in each case till there is a clearance t all round. When prisms of the form shown in Fig. 10 are. to be polished, 45 degrees blocks having two locating surfaces arranged horizontally and vertically respectively on the vertical wall W, Figs. 12 and 15, are used with a saw-tooth bar 23, Fig. 13, resting on its base 24 on the sloping walls. The bars have one or two locating surfaces 41 on the vertical walls and surfaces 33 on one of the walls 27 on which the sidea R<1>, R<2> of the prism are supported. The prisms may be supported in those areas not in contact with the locating surfaces by wax.
