Abstract
577,051. Collapsable push-chairs. BLANEY, A. M., and GROGAN, H. O. April 3, 1944, No. 6159. [Class 108 (i)] In a push chair collapsable to a box-like structure resembling a suit-case, the seat framework of the chassis comprises two side bearers 1 integral with a well 44 for storing an apron and hood. Links 2, 3 are pivoted to the bearers 1, and 4, 5 to the links 2, 3, while a link 6 connects the pairs of upper and lower links. A link 45 connects link 5 to the bearer 1, and a wheel support 8 is pivoted to the links 4, 5. Slotted extensions 9 of the support 8 receive wheel axles 10. Arms 12 pivoted to the bearer 1 are slotted at 13 to receive the axles 10 and are connected by a tension spring 14. Links 15 pivoted on the arms 12 are adapted to slide along bearers 1 under the action of compression springs 16. A bell crank lever 19, 21 pivoted to the frame has its short arm 19 connected by a link 20 to the common pivot of links 2, 4, 6, while the long arm 21 supports the main back rest 22 which is in two parts hinged together. An additional back rest 24 is hinged at 48 to the back rest 22 and depends downwardly over it. The arm 21 is pivoted to a U-shaped handle 25 held in extended position by a catch having a hook 33 engaging a projection 34 on the upholstered side member 35 which is pivoted to the bearer 1. The side members 35 are maintained in opened position by arms 36 pivoted at 38. A step 41 is supported by bars 39, 40, 42, the latter having a straight end portion adapted to slide parallel to the bearer 1, and provided with a hook which is engaged by arm 19 in the closed position of the chair. The collapse of the push chair is effected by disengaging the hook 33 and pressing the handle 25 rearwardly to actuate links 20, 6 forwardly. The links 2, 3 and 4, 5 are caused to close together and draw up the wheel support 8, the wheel axles 10 moving in the slots 13 in arms 12, which remain materially in the same position relatively to the frame. The axles 10 move along slots 9 till the wheels touch, when the arm 21 is pointing downwards. The rigid connection between arm 21 and handle 25 is then released, and handle 25 rotated through a right angle. The back rests 22, 24 follow arm 21 into the collapsed position and form two sides of a container for the push chair. Bar 42 is pushed rearwardly until the step 41 is pulled against bar 39 and forms a third side of the container. The two sides of the body are swung down in their own planes to form a fourth and fifth side of the container, and the sixth side is formed by the seat.
