Abstract
576,019. Softening water. FILTRATORS, Ltd., and STREATFIELD, E. L. Aug. 16, 1944, No. 18809/45. Divided out of 576,014. [Class 46] A process of softening water includes passing water previously treated with lime or lime and soda through a bed of car - bonaceous zeolite of which the layers first traversed by the water are comparatively spent, while the layers subsequently traversed by the water are comparatively fresh. In the construction shown a chamber A is provided with a perforated plate K supporting a bed L of graded anthracite or like material above which is a bed M of carbonaceous zeolite. The upper part of the zeolite is maintained in a spent condition while the lower part is substantially fresh. Water which has been partly softened by lime or lime and soda is supplied to the container through pipe B and after passing through the zeolite is discharged through pipe F. Regeneration of the zeolite is effected by supplying water through pipe G to flush the zeolite, then dilute acid through pipe H, followed by brine through pipe J, and finally water through pipe G. These liquids are discharged through pipe E. Specification 576,014 is referred to.
