Abstract
575,788. Snap-action switches. ARROW ELECTRIC SWITCHES, Ltd. April 5, 1944, No. 6315. Convention date, April 12, 1943. [Class 38 (v)] A snap action switch has for its base a flat plate 20 with a central aperture to take a bearing disc 3 mounted on a square contact-carrying shaft 2, the upper end of which is axially bored in order to serve as a bearing for operating spindle 5 having for its upper bearing a dished cover 18 and having a handle 6 fixed thereto. Two spiral springs 15, 30 are coiled round the spindle between three circular plates 12, 13, 14 as shown in Fig. 1, plates 13, 14 being fixed to the spindle by slots 513, 514 thereon. The springs have their radially-outturned ends embracing arms 12a, 12b of plate 12, the upper ends of these arms engaging notches in plate 14. The plate 13 has lugs 13a, 13b abutting against the arms 12a, 12b. The driven element consists of a plate 16 with two arms 16a, 16b parallel to, and outside the arms 12a., 12b which are embraced also by the ends of the springs 15, 30 and is held stationery, while the springs are being tensioned, by an escapement mechanism. The latter consists of an eccentric cam 8, rotating with spindle 5 and received in a circular aperture in detent plate and which slides on a plate 23 having a radial slot to guide the head of a pin 10 on the plate 9. Plate 23 rotates with member 16 by reason of arms 16a, 16b engaging notches in the plate. When operated, springs 15, 30 become stressed, one end of each moving as arms 12a, 12b rotate, the other ends being held by 16a, 16b until the plate 9 is moved out of the notch in plate 21 by eccentric 8, whereupon the spindle 2 is driven to the next position. The springs may alternatively be arranged so that the ends 15x, 15y of spring 15, and ends 30x, 30y of spring 30 engage arms 12a, 12b. respectively, as shown in Fig. 4. Lugs 14a on plate 14 are adapted ultimately to engage arm 16b which is lengthened whereby to provide positive operation should the springs break. The Specification, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, contains a reference to U.S.A. Specification 1,564,016.
