575,617. Treating hygroscopic salts. FAJANS, E., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Dec. 2, 1942, No. 17125. [Classes 1 (ii) and 1 (iii)] Hygroscopic salts such as ammonium nitrate, sodium nitrate, or crude sodium chloride are rendered stable to storage and handling by coating the crystals or granules with a spreading oil which has a spreading pressure on water of not less than 15 dynes per cm. at 15‹C. and a wax in such proportions that there is enough wax and oil together to coat the surface of the particles. The spreading oil may comprise a mineral oil of low volatility such as a lubricating oil and contain oil-soluble polar compounds such as barium oleate, or vegetable oils or fatty acids preferably in a polymerised form. In examples, ammonium nitrate crystals are stirred with the following mixtures at 70‹C. (a) an oxidised spindle oil and paraffin wax (b) a solution of barium oleate in grade 35 lubricating oil and paraffin wax (c) a solution of a polymerised linseed oil fatty acid in grade 35 lubricating oil and paraffin wax.
