Abstract

Aircraft runways, roads, floors and like surfaces are prepared by applying to the earth's surface or to laid surfaces of soil, sand, ashes, ground cinders, stone dust or the like, a liquid water-repellent preparation which either comprises a water-insoluble carboxylic acid and/or a salt thereof, together with an organic solvent if required, or an aqueous solution, dispersion, or emulsion thereof, other than bitumen, tar oil, crude petroleum, engine sump oils, or their aqueous emulsions; alternatively, the ground material and the liquid preparation can be mixed and compressed into blocks, together, if necessary, with binding-materials such as asphalt, bitumen, or anhydrous calcium sulphate. When the surface of the ground is to be treated, it may first be consolidated by rolling if only slight penetration is desired, or it may be broken up by harrows, the material may be mixed in with rotary tillers, and the surface finally consolidated. A surfacing layer of tar macadam, cement, or the like may be subsequently applied. The carboxylic acids which may be used are oleic or naphthenic acids, polymerized linseed oil fatty acids, liquid rosin (a mixture containing water-insoluble carboxylic acids), wood rosin if used with an organic solvent or other carboxylic acids or their salts so as to give a liquid preparation, or the acids mentioned in Specification 575,484. The ammonium, triethanolamine, aluminium, or iron salts of water-insoluble carboxylic acids and, as solvents, oils, e.g. spindle oil, kerosene, oleine oil, oxidized spindle oil, polymerized vegetable oils, alcohols, ketones, ethers, hydrocarbons and substituted hydrocarbons can be employed, or aqueous solutions of sodium oleate or sodium rosinate.
