Abstract
575,128. Coating metals. METALLIZING ENGINEERING CO., Inc. June 4, 1943, No. 8984.. Convention date, Aug. 6, 1942. [Class 82 (ii)] [Also in Group XXII] In order to bond a layer of sprayed metal on a metal surface, a series of small amounts of a bonding metal are deposited from at least one electrode which is contacted with the surface electrically connected to it so that the electrode metal is fused to produce on the metal surface an irregularly pitted deposit having its surface characterised by an irregular roughness with a multitude of projections with overhanging edges and minute craters with overhanging edges, coating metal being afterwards sprayed on the conditioned surface. Additional amounts of metal may be deposited on the surface by repeating the bonding operation which may be performed by relative movement between the electrode and the surface. Successive areas of the surface may be coated by contacting the electrode repetitously, e.g. by stroking the surface with the electrode. The coating may be effected in an inert atmosphere, e.g. by clamping the electrode in a holder provided with one or more jets directing an inert gas, such as nitrogen, to the top of the electrode. The coating metal may be steel, copper, bronze, zinc, nickel, aluminium, brass, cast iron or stainless steel and the voltage used may be ¢ to 20 volts.
