Abstract

574,879. Explosives. COCKBAIN, E. G. and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 18, 1942, No. 16291. [Class 9 (ii)] Particles of an explosive which is more sensitive than T.N.T., e.g. pentaerythritol tetranitrate, are coated first with wax and then with protein (or protein derivative) which has been rendered insoluble in water and in molten T.N.T. The tetranitrate, with its two coatings, is then mixed with molten T.N.T., and, because of its protein &c. covering, the wax is not stripped from the tetranitrate. The protein &c. may be egg albumin, blood albumin, blood globulin, casein, the meta-proteins from eggwhite, glue or gelatine. The tetranitrate may be coated with wax as described in Specification 574,271 (by pouring the molten wax into an aqueous supension of the tetranitrate and stirring) ; an aqueous solution of glue is then added, and then aqueous hydrochloric acid. The slurry is cooled, tannic acid is added, the suspension is filtered, and the solids are washed free from mineral acidity, dried and mixed with molten T.N.T.
