Abstract
574,485. Cyanamide. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. June 15, 1943, Nos. 9573 and 9574. Convention dates, June 12, 1942, and June 23, 1942. [Class 1 (ii)] Cyanamide is obtained by precipitating calcium from a slurry of calcium cyanamide, e.g., by means of carbon dioxide, sulphur dioxide or sulphuric acid, in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide the feed of calcium cyanamide being so regulated by a pH control. device that the solution is maintained at pH 4.0-7.2 and by a temperature controller to maintain the temperature at 0-55‹ C. Solid carbon dioxide is the preferred precipitant. The system as shown in Fig. 1, is charged with water or a weak solution of cyanamide from a previous operation. Calcium cyanamide is supplied from a feeding device 6 into a tank 7 in a line 8, and the resulting slurry passes through valves 9 and 16 and a feed line 4 into a storage tank 11 under the action of a pump 5. Carbon dioxide from a feeding device 10 is also passed into the tank 11. The mixed slurry passes into a stirred water-jacketted closed vessel 1 provided with a leg 12 submerged in liquid 13 for the escape of excess carbon dioxide, a pH controller 22 and a temperature controller 23. Controllers 22 and 23 are electrically connected with the motor which drives the calcium cyanamide feeder so as to stop the feed when the pH or temperature rises above the predetermined limit. The reaction magma leaves the vessel 1 by line 14. By operating a valve 17 part or all of the circulating magma may be passed through the tank 7. By closing the valve 16 and opening a valve 18 (preferably when a slurry containing 20-30 per cent. solids has been obtained), the reaction-magma may be passed to a filter 19, the filtrate being discharged into a container 21. The filtrate may be combined with wash water from the filter cake and returned to the apparatus for a further extraction. By making three such extractions the cyanamide concentration may reach about 25 per cent. while the dicyandiamide content is about 1.5 per cent.
