Abstract

1275893 Sewage treatment FOSTER D SNELL Inc 9 Nov 1970 [25 Sept 1970] 53273/70 Heading C1C A method of solubilizing sewage sludge comprises digesting sludge at an elevated temperature with an aqueous solution of SO 2 at a steam pressure of 30-100 p.s.i.g. in a closed system, the SO 2 being present in an amount equal to 0À2 to 5À0% of the weight of solids in the sludge. The solubilizing treatment is carried out for 10-120 minutes after which time, the solids are separated from the aqueous solution. The digestion is preferably carried out at 252‹ to 328‹ F. The resulting aqueous solution may be concentrated by evaporation to form a molasseslike product, containing at least 40% solids of which 85% are organic and 30% proteinaceous.. This product is suitable as an animal feed.
