Abstract
573,795. Storage batteries. BAIRD, N. C., and MANSON, R. K. Dec. 8, 1943, No. 20530. Drawings to Specification. [Class 53] The plates of a storage battery are constituted by pencils having cores of acid-resisting thread, e.g., glass, suspended from conducting supports such as grids so as to hang freely, the elements having insulating sheaths serving as separators. The cores are wound with wires formed of lead or coated with lead or lead-antimony alloy spiralled with steep pitch in opposite directions, and the outer sheaths may be formed of insulating threads or wires also spiralled in opposite directions. The pencils may be formed in pairs by U-shaped loops or be separate. A covering of pitch over the supporting grids can be provided for positively locating the pencils in position. In the Provisional Specification it is stated that each glass thread is coated with carbon, formed by covering with sugar solution and carbonising the sugar.
