Abstract
573,711. Water-softening. CLARK, L. M., EVANS, H., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Nov. 16, 1943, No. 19076. [Class 46] A water-softening process comprises separately adding the water and aqueous caustic soda, or aqueous lime and if desired sodium carbonate. to an agitated aqueous suspension of magnesium hydroxide crystals, while maintaining sufficient agitation and a sufficient number of such crystals present relative to the rate of magnesium hardness removal to ensure that substantially all the magnesium hardness removed from the water crystallizes on the existing magnesium hydroxide crystals, and separating clear soft water from the suspension. For cold water softening the weight of existing crystals in the precipitation zone is at least 500 times and generally 1,000 to 5,000 times the weight of magnesium hydroxide being precipitated per hour, and the most suitable sizes of crystals are between 5 and 50 microns diameter. In the preferred form of the invention both magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate are precipitated on to existing crystals of magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate. The equipment may comprise a precipitation tank fitted with a propeller stirrer and a settling tank. Water having both temporary and permanent hardness is fed to the precipitation tank which contains the crystals. Into the opposite side of the tank is fed an aqueous solution of caustic soda. The overflow from the precipitation tank is passed to the settling tank where crystals of magnesium hydroxide and calcium carbonate settle out. Clear water is removed from the top of the settling tank and the bulk of the settled solid is pumped back to the precipitation tank. Specifications 571,276 and 571,718, [both in Group III], are referred to.
