Abstract

571,276. Magnesium hydroxide, CLARK, L. M., ROBINSON, J. G., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 17, 1943, No. 4319. [Classes 1 (iii) and 32] Magnesium hydroxide is obtained in coarse crystals and crystal aggregates, e.g., exceeding 30 microns in diameter, by the reaction of an aqueous solution of a magnesium salt with an aqueous suspension or solution of a hydroxide in the presence of a vigorously agitated aqueous suspension of magnesium hydroxide crystals the weight of which is at least 20 times and preferably between 30 and 100 times the weight of magnesium hydroxide precipitated per hour, the volume of the reaction zone and the rates of feed and outflow being so adjusted that the average agitation time of the reaction mixture is not less than half an hour and preferably between 1 and 10 hours. Advantageously the solution of a magnesium salt and the solution or suspension of a hydroxide are added continuously to different points of the vigorously stirred suspension of magnesium hydroxide. The aqueous suspension or solution of the hydroxide and/or the aqueous .solution of magnesium salt may each conveniently contain 0.2-5.0 per cent. by weight of reactant. Sea-water, from which all the calcium bicarbonate has been precipitated may be used as the aqueous solution of the magnesium salt. Examples relate to the reaction of: (1) magnesium chloride with sodium hydroxide; (2) sea-water, freed from bicarbonates, with milk of lime. Specification 482,339 is referred to.
