Abstract

573,611. Hypodermic injectors. JONES, F. C. Dec. 6, 1943, No. 20376. [Class 81 (ii)] The needle of a hypodermic injector is provided with a contiguous protective covering of a transparent plastic material, preferably flexible and applied thereto by dipping the needle into a plastic solution so as to be capable of ready removal by tearing or peeling prior to use. As shown in Fig. 1 the injector comprises a container 1, made of a transparent flexible plastic material, the contents of which may be expelled by compression or by an internal slidable plunger. The base of the needle 2 is embedded in a small plastic or other cork 3, which fits into the mouth 4 of the container, and beneath which is placed a small removable cylinder 5 thus preventing the lower end of the needle from piercing the membrane 6 that seals the upper end of the container. The projecting part of the needle 2 is protected by a covering 7 such as a plastic varnish, or if necessary the whole injector may be dipped into a plastic varnish to safeguard against leakage. In a modification, the needle may be supported in a reversible holder which may or may not be threaded, the needle, until required for use, being directed inwardly so as to be housed inside the container, both projecting parts of the needle being protected by a covering of plastic material. According to the Provisional Specification a plastic sheath or cover may be provided which can be slipped off the needle.
