[Class 138 (ii)] In order to avoid the expense and difficulties usual with castings the bed of an ironing, calendering, or pressing machine is made with a front or ironing surface of a plate 1 of cast or pressed steel or alloy of the same thickness throughout backed by a steam-heating pipe or pipes 4 separated from but touching the rear surface of the plate, a heat-conducting packing 6 in contact with both and a cover 2 spaced from and enclosing them, with or without heat insulating material between the pipes and the cover. The surface of the plate 1 is machined and polished, the cover 2 being of any suitable metal or insulating material and secured detachably or otherwise to the edges of the plate. The pipe or pipes is or are arranged in zig-zag or circuitous form to distribute the heat and may be of a section to give maximum contact area with the rear surface of the plate. The sections of a multi-roll ironer may be independent or, as shown in Fig. 3, formed in a continuous element. the plate being welded to intersecting ribs 11 forming a support. The pipes may be secured by clips or other fixing devices to the plate 1 and the interstices may be filled with metal wool, granules or the like of suitable heat conducting value. Instead of a convoluted pipe, a grid formed of longitudinal headers provided with transverse pipes connecting them grid-wise may be used. At the rear of the pipes is a heat insulating or other suitable sheet 5 between which and the cover may be air or lightly packed heat insulating material.
