Abstract

Modified phenol-aldehyde resins which may be used for impregnating cotton, wool, boards, paper or admixed with fillers, e.g. wood flour as a moulding powder, are obtained by reacting a phenol, formaldehyde and a thiocyanate, preferably ammonium thiocyanate, preferably in presence of a small quantity of acid or alkali as catalyst, the reaction taking place spontaneously on mixing the ingredients or with the aid of gentle heating. Thermoplastic resins are obtained if the resin is removed after separation into layers has taken place; while if the layers are further heated with stirring, a thermosetting product is obtained. Phenol, cresols, resorcinol and higher homologues of cresol obtained from tar fractions are specified as the phenolic reactant. In examples: (1) 1.5 lbs. ammonium thiocyanate, 3.0 lbs. 36-40 per cent formalin are mixed and 2.2 lbs. cresol and 4 lbs. formalin added thereto with phosphoric acid as catalyst. After heating up to 105 DEG C., separation into layers occurs, the resinous layer being soluble in a mixture of alcohol and methyl ethyl ketone, or acetone; (2) the solution in acetone and alcohol is mixed with acetyl or nitro cellulose ester containing 4 1/2 per cent dimethylphthalate and used as a lacquer; (3) a mixture of ammonium thiocyanate, carbolic acid, and formalin is reacted in presence of hydrochloric acid; the resinous product is mixed with linters, cotton wool, sawdust, or pulp and dried to give a moulding powder.
