572,971. Automatic control systems for D.C. motors. IGRANIC ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., MAYNARD, S. P., and BEDFORD, J. M. Sept. 17, 1943, No. 15294. [Class 38 (iv)] Speed.-To match the speed of a direct current motor with another, a switch controlling a resistance in its shunt field circuit has its duration of opening and closing controlled respectively by electronic valves T1 and T2, the ignition instants of which are determined by the charging of condensers m, n. The charging times of these condensers are simultaneously variable in opposite senses by means (not shown) responsive to the difference in speed of the motors, for example by a jockey roller responsive to the tension in, or the length of a loop of, material which is being operated on by the motors. The charging circuits comprise respectively resistances a, b-e and f, l-g and the condensers or the resistances b-e, l-g may be controlled by the speed difference. The valve circuits are arranged as shown so that each valve is non-conducting until the potential across the condenser in its grid circuit has risen to a predetermined value. When valve T1 conducts, the switch 1b shortcircuits the resistance p-q in the field circuit of the controlled motor SM. A switch 1a is also closed so that a relay 2 energizes as soon as valve T2 conducts and a switch 2a opens to restore the circuits to their initial condition.
