572,566. Preventing unauthorised use of motor vehicles. NEIMAN, A. Sept. 1, 1939, No. 25100. Convention date, Sept. 1, 1938. [Class 79 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A device for locking the steering gear of an automobile and for breaking the ignition circuit comprises a cylindrical block removably mounted in a collar permanently fixed to the steering column. The collar 16 is welded to the steering column 11, an opening 15 being formed in the column to allow the passage of a locking bolt 23. A bush 13, welded to the steering rod 12, is provided with lateral openings 14 ta engage the bolt. The looking device comprises a cylindrical block 19 which is inserted in the collar 16 and is retained therein by a blade spring 27 which expands into a recess 18 in the collar. An aperture 31 in the collar permits the insertion of a spike to flatten the spring when the block is to be removed. The block 19 includes a cylinder lock B of known construction containing wards and controlled by a key 25. A rod 45 depending from the lock passes through a slot in the bolt 23 and rests in a recess 46 in a disc 39 of insulating material which carries a blade 41 that moves over contact studs 37 to which the ignition circuit is connected. Rotation of the lock by the key 25 operates the ignition circuit and, at the same time, permits a spring 33 to thrust the bolt 23 into one of the slots 14 and lock the steering wheel. This does not take place unless the key 25 is withdrawn, as a spring plunger 35 abuts against the lower end of the key. The key may also be turned to an intermediate position, shown in Fig. 5, in which the ignition circuit is broken but the bolt 23 is held out of action in order to permit the car to be moved, but starting of the engine is prevented.
