Abstract

572,522. Beams. MORTON, B. Sept. 13, 1943, No. 14962. [Class 20 (iv)] [Also in Group V] A preformed-beam for floors, roofs and the like, of the kind having side portions shaped to constitute structural ribs with rebated, recessed or splayed outer side faces, is characterized in that a portion of its reinforcement projects through the side faces from the tension flange or web and extends upwardly to or beyond the compression area, in such manner that when two such beams abut side by side and grouting is applied to the groove between them, the grouting will flow around the projecting reinforcements. In one construction, Fig. 2, the beams are of hollow box section and have inclined sides 1 and 2 terminating in base flange 3. Each beam has longitudinal reinforcements 4 and spaced transverse reinforcements 5, the latter being of inverted U form with their upper portions extending through the upper flanges 6 of the beams and their sides projecting into the grooves formed between the sides I, 2. In modifications the sides of the beams incline in the opposite direction to that shown or are parallel, and in other modifications the loops 7 of the transverse reinforcements are tied together or, alternatively, are shaped so that they intermesh with those of adjacent beams so that a longitudinal reinforcing rod can be threaded through the loops. In another construction, Fig. 6, the transverse reinforcing rods are looped at 10 to transverse rods 11 which are' embedded in a concrete or other covering material moulded on to the beams. In a modification the transverse rods are of the form shown in Fig. 2, but have their upper portions extending in the concrete floor covering and not through the beam flanges 6. The transverse reinforcing wires may be arranged at right angles to the axis of the beam or at an inclination thereto, and' may be disposed vertically or in an inclined plane. As shown in Fig. 13, the mould used in forming the beam may have inserts 16 formed with spaced projections 12, the spaces between which receive the protruding wires. In a modification, Fig. 14, the wall of the mould has recesses for receiving the wires 5, the recesses being normally closed by the spring jaws 14 of clips 13.
