572,328. Column stills. HUNTINGTON, HEBERLEIN & CO., Ltd., COPLEY, E. D., and MARCKWALD, H. G. B. Oct. 20, 1941, No. 13469. [Class 32] In fractionating towers, particularly for the concentration of sulphuric acid vapours, of the kind comprising a series of superposed bubble plates and a deep cooling plate placed above the bubble trays, improved heat transfer between the vapours passing through the cooling plate and the liquid therein is effected by providing vapour passage pipes 17 of large cross sectional area and upstanding from the bottom of the plate and mounting in the pipe 17 tubes 20 of slightly smaller cross section and closed at their upper ends by plates 21, the vapours being thus forced to pass through the narrow annular passages formed between the pipes 17, 20. Turbulence of the vapours stream passing through the annular passages is obtained by forming the inner tube with baffles, threads, or recesses Figs. 7-9 (not shown). The casing for the trays is made of acid proof material and the lowest tray rests on a supporting ring 8 carried by a gliding ring 9 cast in halves. Each tray is cast separately and rests by means of a flange 7 on the wall of the tray beneath. An upper tray 24 filled with loose packing is provided to absorb any liquid particles of acid. The bubble trays are provided with deflectors' 15, Fig. 2, of the usual hook shape cast integrally with the trays but a broken connection allowing for expansion is provided by making in the radial part 15a a gap 35 which is filled by a small plate 37 of silicon iron cemented in position. This matter forms the subject of Specification 572,334.
