Abstract
571,881. Obtaining coherent masses from powdered metals. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. July 13, 1943, No. 11406. Convention date, July 14, 1942. [Class 82 (i)] . Articles of intricate shape or design and also long rods of 1 inch diameter or more are made from extruded plastic powdered metal that is placed in a mould and dried with simultaneous application of pressure. The compact is then heated to a higher temperature to remove plasticizing material and is finally sintered. The plasticizing medium may be glycerine or water and glycerine, gelatine, alkyd resin, caesin, &c. The volume of glycerine employed is from 35 to 40 per cent of the volume of the powdered metal. To reduce friction the partly extruded material, which may contain tungsten carbide and cobalt and be in the shape of rods, tubes, spirals, &c., may be wrapped in newspaper &c. to reduce friction between the mould and the material. The filled mould is heated to from 70‹ to 95‹ C. to remove moisture and a pressure of about 1000 lbs. is applied and maintained whilst the temperature is raised to 150‹ C. to remove the glycerine &c. The material is then sintered either in the mould or after removal therefrom. Specification 544,974, [Group XXII], is referred to.
