Abstract
571,692. Sampling liquids. MICHALSKI, W., and INSTITUTION OF AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERS. June 24, 1943, No. 10233. [Class 106 (v)] [Also in Groups III, XIX and XXIX] Means for determining the amount of air dissolved in a liquid circulating in a circuit, comprises a cylinder 5, Fig. 1, into the lower part of which a sample of the liquid can be diverted, a similar quantity of liquid being simultaneously discharged from the upper part of the cylinder into the circuit to maintain continuity of flow. The liquid normally flows from a pipe-line 1 through a valve 8 and pipe 2 to a pipe-line 4. Before the test, a piston 6 is at the bottom of the cylinder 5 and the space above the piston is filled with the liquid. Valve 21 is then opened and valve 8 moved to its lower position by operating a trigger 9. The pressure is indicated by a gauge 29. When a predetermined quantity of liquid has passed into the cylinder, the piston-rod 11 operates trip mechanism 12, 13, 37 to return the valve 8 to its upper position . The volume of aerated liquid plus free air in the cylinder below the piston is noted and a valve 20 is then opened to reduce the pressure above the piston to atmosphere and thus release some of the dissolved air in the liquid below the piston. The new volume below the piston is observed and the volume of liquid is determined either by putting the liquid column into communication with a manometer 24 or by removing the liquid through a pipe 33 for weighing. Each time the valve 8 is operated, a circuit is completed to operate a time-recorder. Temperature is measured by inserting a thermometer in an inlet 17.
