Abstract

571,143. Catalytic conversion of hydrocarbon oils. UNIVERSAL OIL PRODUCTS CO. Oct. 22, 1942, No. 14840. Convention date, Oct. 27, 1941. [Classes 1 (i), 32, and 91] In processes for the catalytic cracking, dehydrogenation, or desulphurisation of hydrocarbons of the kind in which the suspension of catalyst and hydrocarbon vapors is maintained in a 'dense phase' in the lower portion and in a 'dilute phase' in the upper portion of the conversion and regeneration zone respectively, the catalyst is continuously circulated in a dense phase through the zones by conducting it from a point below the surface of the dense phase in each zone to a point below the surface of the dense phase in the other zones, the flow of catalyst being promoted by maintaining the catalyst under a higher pressure in one zone than in the second zone and by introducing gases or vapors into the conduit between the second zone and the first zone. The hydrocarbon stock is fed through line 1 and mixed with solid contact powder fed through line 3 is injected upwardly into the reactor 30 where a dense phase is maintained below the level of line 11 and a less dense phase above that level. The gaseous reaction products with a small amount of contact agents in suspension therein pass off through line 5 to a separator 6 where the contact material is separated and returned to the dense phase through line 7. Constituents of the dense phase are continually removed through line 10 and mixed with an oxidising gas in line 15 through the injector action of which the dense phase is conveyed to a second similar reactor 29 where the contact agent is regenerated. From the reactor 29 gazeous products are removed through line 20 and separator 21 while the regenerated catalyst is recycled through line 25 to the reactor 30. A further supply of gases is injected through line 18 to maintain the solids in suspension. Flow of suspension through line 25 is maintained by operating the reactor 29 at a higher pressure than the reactor 30 the pressure being regulated by an electrical control 28 controlling valves 9, 24 in the draw off pipes 8, 23. In the modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), the contacting zones are inclined so as to permit the use of straight vertical transfer lines for the catalyst.
