[Classes 83 (iii) and 83 (iv)] Uniting by fusion.-An apparatus for holding and manipulating heavy work for effecting welding and like operations, comprises a built-up beam having at each end a built-up crank provided with a trunnion received in a bearing, the beam carrying a powerdriven rotating table and being itself turned by power means. The beam 1 consists of a box girder formed of welded plates with cranks 2, 2* at each end having tubular trunnions 3 mounted in bearings 27 supported in concrete pillars 28 arranged at each end of a pit 29. The beam, at its centre part, is widened to receive a path' ring 5 on which rotates a toothed ring 14 secured to the underside of the turntable 6 and which is driven by a pair of diametrically disposed pinions 16 on shafts 17 connected by gear-boxes, flexible couplings and worm gear to a shaft 19 driven by a motor 20 secured to the beam. The turntable is secured by bolts to a plate 8 welded to the upper end of a hollow shaft 9 rotated in a circular housing 10 and having a screw-threaded end 11 to receive a bearing ring 12 secured on the shaft by a locking ring 13. The peripheral edge of one crank carries a toothed quadrant 21 engaged by a pinion on a shaft driven by a small motor 24 through a fluid coupling so that the starting torque will not be beyond the power of the small motor. The gear further embodies an electrically controlled brake 26 so that if the current fails suddenly the brake comes into action automatically.
