[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A machine for trimming the edges of sheet metal and like articles, or the edges of sheets &c., has a milling or grinding cutter 15 against which the edge of the article 65 is pressed by a roller 64 and a guide 43, the roller and guide being resiliently pressed towards each other and the roller being positively driven to feed the work past the cutter. The machine comprises a table 10 on which is secured a bracket 33 having adjustably secured thereto by a stud 37 a headstock 28 carrying a spring-pressed centre 26 for supporting the upper end of the cutter, which is mounted on a spindle 16 supported by bearing 18 in a casing 17 attached to the machine frame. An electric motor 24 drives the spindle 16 through a triple belt 21. The work guide 43 is slidable on the table 10 between the feet of the bracket 33 and has a slot 44 to accommodate the cutter, over which is a bevelled strip 45, Fig. 3, pressed against the work by springs 53 on rods 51 attached to the guide. The rods slide through a bracket 50 attached to the machine frame and through a bar 54 forming an abutment for the springs, the bar being engaged by a screw 55 in the bracket which adjusts the spring compression and an adjustable screw 47 on the guide engaging the table 10 to limit its forward position. The roller 64, which is cup-shaped to conform to the interior of the work, is rotatable on a pin 82 carried by a slide 57 adjustable in a slot in the table 10 by a screw 62 operated by a handle 58. Annular teeth 83 inside the roller are engaged by a pinion 84 on a shaft 79 mounted on the slide 57 and driven by a flexible and extensible shaft 77, a worm gear 72 and a belt drive 73 from the motor 24. In operation, the work 65 is pressed by the guide 43 against a knurled rim 87 of the roller which moves it past the cutter whilst it is pressed down on the table by a spring-actuated ball plunger 66 in the headstock 28, the cutter 15 having helical teeth and being rotated in a direction to assist in forcing the work against the table. The cutter may be mounted on an inclined axis as shown to bevel the edge of the work so that when two similarly treated work pieces are placed together, an annular V-shaped channel will be formed to facilitate welding together for the construction of spherical bottles for gas storage, the setting of the screw 47 determining the depth of cut, or, alternatively, the cutter may rotate on a vertical axis and be of a conical or other shape to produce the required bevel, and a grinding wheel may be used instead of, or in addition to, the cutter. The machine may be used for bevelling the edges of sheets or hollow stampings having straight sides. In a modified construction, the guide 43, Fig. 6, is clamped to the table 10, together with the headstock 28, and the slide 57 carrying the roller 64 is pressed yieldingly towards the guide by a spring 94 on the screw 62. When no work is in the machine, the slide 57 is withdrawn by the screw 62.
