Abstract

569,889. Hygrometric apparatus. MARCONI INSTRUMENTS, Ltd., and BARTLEY, W. B. July 26, 1943, No. 12136. [Class 97 (iii)] The moisture content of a porous or granulated &c. substance is determined by applying high-frequency electrical energy to the substance and ascertaining the loss of weight of such substance during such application. As shown, the apparatus employed comprises a direct reading balance B having a weigh pan p, a pair of condenser plates e,-carried by operating insulated tong handles t, an oscillator circuit o including a valve v and a control and high-tension circuit c including a source of high-tension energy H.T., a switch b, a no-load release d and an oscillation frequency choke h. The oscillation circuit is connected to the condenser plates as shown. In operation, a very light paper bag pb is placed on the weigh pan p and filled with the substance until the scale B indicates full scale reading. The condenser plates e are then adjusted to touch the sides of the paper bag and the switch b closed. Generation of oscillations commences and continues until the substance, being dried, has lost so much moisture that the power loss has reached some predetermined low figure when the noload release cuts off the high tension and, if desired, may light an indicating lamp. The loss of weight of the substance as indicated on the scale B, then indicates the moisture content driven off. In place of a condenser, a solenoid or resonant cavity may be used.
