Abstract

569,694. Shearing. IRELAND, W., PASMORE, H. T., and AUTOMATIC COIL WINDER & ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT CO., Ltd. Sept. 1, 1943, No. 14276. [Class 83 (iv)] [Also in Group VIII] A machine for cutting wire, strip, ribbon, cord, &c. 34 into predetermined lengths comprises a shaft 15 driven at a constant speed, a feeding device 35 driven from the shaft 15 through a clutch 30, means for clutching and de-clutching after a set time interval, and a cutting device operated while the feeding device is declutched. The clutch 30 is normally held in driving engagement by a rod 18 and spring 77, causing the shaft 15 to drive bevels 31, 32, 33 and feed rollers 35, 36. The bevel 32 is on a shaft 51 and drives a shaft 53 and a disc 54 thereon through change-speed gears 52. The disc 54 drives a disc 55 through an adjustable roller 56 to give any speed between two limits. A cam 60 is mounted, with a small free movement controlled by a spring 65, Fig. 2, on the disc 55 and, when the desired length of wire 34 has been fed, it engages a follower 70 to move a lever 71 and arm 73 to the left, a wedge projection 75 of the arm riding over the pointed top of a lever 76 which is pivoted at 76a, pinned to the rod 18 at 76b, and adjusted by a stop 80. The cam 60 is adjusted by a screw 64 to release its follower directly the wedge 75 has passed the top of the lever 76. The lever 71 is arrested at this point by a stop 90 and a spring 81, pulling the arm 73 down, causes the wedge 75 to move the lever 76 to the right, against the action of the spring 77, thus releasing the clutch 30 and closing a clutch 19. This acts, through gearing 20 and a shaft 21, to rotate an eccentric cutter 22 which severs the wire 34. At the same time a cam 23 on the shaft 21, normally held in the position shown by a. light spring 23b, acts on a projection 74 of the arm 73 to move this to the right, the wedge 75 riding over the lever 76 which is moved to the left by the spring 77, thus reversing the clutches 19, 30 and causing the cycle of operations to recommence. The cut pieces of wire are deflected by a guard 44. The rotary cutter 22 may be replaced by one continuously operated and moved into and out of range of the wire at appropriate times or by a spring-operated cutter which is set and latched by a continuously rotating cam and is released, to cut the wire, by the declutching of the feeding means.
