Abstract
569,540. Control systems for resistance welding. PRESSED STEEL CO., Ltd., and SIMMIE, W. S. Oct. 15, 1943, No. 16931. [Class 38 (iv)] In a butt welding system of the kind in which a condenser 11 is charged through a rectifier 13 and then discharged through the primary winding 15 of a welding transformer 16, the work is first flashed or pre-heated by including in the discharge circuit an adjustable resistance 18 which limits the discharge current. A switch 19, preferably of the ignitron type, subsequently short circuits resistance 18 and allows the full welding current to flow, The charging switch 12 between the condenser and the rectifier opens when the welding switch 14 in the discharge circuit is closed. The work may be coated with a flux, or a reducing atmosphere otherwise provided, during the preheating operation. To avoid loss of charge from the condenser during pre-heating, the switch 12 may be omitted and a normally closed switch, preferably of the ignitron type, provided on the input side of the rectifier, this switch being arranged to open only when the short-circuiting switch of the resistance is closed.
