568,590. Mounting lenses. HASSELKUS, J. W., and RICKETS, W. T. Oct. 8, 1943, Nos. 16523 and 21542. [Class 97 (i)] In a method of securing an optical element in its mounting the element is held lightly against an abutment in the mounting and the space bounded by the mounting and the edge of the element filled with an easily fusible metal. As shown, Fig. 1, a compound lens a is held against an abutment c in a lens mount b by a sleeve d which has at its lower end an external chamfer j. Wood's metal h in a molten condition is injected through a hole i in the mount to fill the space between the lens, the mount and the chamfer ; the sleeve being removed after the metal has solidified. In a modification, Fig. 3 (not shown) the lens mount has a screw-threaded extension on to which is screwed the threaded ring k having a flange arranged to rest with peripheral clearance on a ledge m of a secondary mount n. The mount carrying the lens may be adjusted radially and axially in the secondary mount before securing in position by Wood's metal.
