Abstract

568,347. Shock - absorbers. HOUDAILLE-HERSHEY CORPORATION. July 30, 1942, No. 10688. Convention date, April 10. [Class 108 (iii)] Relates to a hydraulic, piston-and - cylinder shockabsorber having valve means for controlling the flow of liquid on relative movement of the parts, liquid displaced by entry of the piston P into the cylinder 10 being forced into a chamber 40 containing a compensating member 44 such as a rubber or like container filled with compressed air or gas, which contracts and expands in accordance with the movement of the piston. According to the invention, the valve means is operable in accordance with the pressure in the cylinder. As shown, the valve means is carried in the piston and on slow shortening of the shock-absorber, against the action of a spring 35, liquid flows through a restricting orifice 33, in a spring- pressed slide-valve 31, and passages 37 to the chamber 40. On quick movement of the piston into the cylinder the pressure forces a spring- pressed valve 23 from its seat and liquid flows through peripheral passages 27 and the passages 37 into the chamber 40. When the pressure is released the spring 35 extends the shockabsorber, the liquid pressure moving the slide-valve 31 to allow free flow. The shock-absorber is secured in position by an eye 18 on the end of the piston-rod and holes 12 in the end of the cylinder.
